Aschoff Granuloma
Rheumatic Heart Disease - Aschoff granuloma. In acute rheumatic fever, the most characteristic histologic lesion is a granulomatous inflammatory infiltrate composed of plump histiocytes called Aschoff cells or Anitschkow cells. Some of these histiocytes form multinucleated giant cells. Then they organize into granulomata. This H&E image shows a typical Aschoff granuloma in human mitral valve. It is located in the interface bewteee the spongiosa and the fibrosa layers of the valve.  Back to Valvular Disease
