Curriculum - Pericardium Malignant Metastatic Tumor
Metastatic adenocarcinoma and fibrinous pericardial exudate in a pericardial biopsy of a patient with recurrent pericardial effusion.
The upper portion corresponds to the seroal surface, now replace by fibrinous exudate, acute inflammation and tumor cells.
The fibrosa layer of the pericardium is heavyly infiltrated by malignant cells with large hyperchromatic nuclei. These cells also infiltrate the mediastinal adipose tissue that overlays the fibrosa layer.
