Healed Transmural Myocardial Infarct

head>

These micrographs show a transmural section of myocardium which is marked thinned. This is due to loss of most of the compact zone of the myocardium which has been replaced by fibrous (yellow) scar tissue (in the Movat stain). Note the absence of myocytes in the scar area at high magnification. The epicardial adipose tissue is still conspicuous. There is only a thin layer of viable myocardium in the subendocardial area (top in both section). The parietal pericardium is also visible, with a small gap between it and the epicardium of the ventricular wall.
