Myocardial Infarction - Right Ventricular Infarction
Nitroblue tetrazolium staining of the heart shows transmural infarction of the right ventricle from the base to the apex of this heart. The dark purple color indicates viable myocardium and the pale pink/tan right ventricular muscle indicates infarcted myocardiu (with loss of lactic dehydrogenase and thcus inability to transform nitroblue tetrazolium into formazan).
In addition to coronary disease right ventricular infarcts are commonly associated with conditions that strain the ventricle such as emphysema, thrombotic disease, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary interstitial fibrosing diseases.
