Mitral Valve - Annular Calcification
Section of the posterolateral wall of the heart showing a segment of the atrial wall the mitral annulus and the ventricular wall. The atrioventricular groove is filled with adipose tissue and in turn the great cardiac vein and the circumflex coronary artery are seen coursing through the adipose tissue in the grove. The posterolateral leaflet leaflet of the mitral valve is seen in the image. There are calcium excrescences projecting from the atrialis into the atrial cavity. Furthermore, at the base of the valve, there is calcification of the annulus extending into the ventricular muscle.
