Mitral Valve - Congenital Diseases
This image shows a four chamber view of a heart with a hypoplastic mitral valve(MV)resulting in a hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). The stenotic (hypoplastic) mitral valve is highlighed by the arrowheds in the illustration on the right and some chordae tendineae can be seen in the photgraph on the left. The atria are developed normally and there is a large atrial septal defect (ASD) produced by a septostomy procedure. The left ventricle is underdeveloped and rather small compared to the normal size righ ventricle. SVC = superior vena cava, RA = right atrium, LA = left atrium, LSPV = left superior pulmonary vein, RV = right ventricle, IVS = interventricular septum, LV = left ventricle.
